Wow.

This just came in via comment and I wanted to share it really fast:
“over 9500 people exited the store as of 9:30 PM I’m sure there were at least another thousand left in there.”
I’m guessing he works in the store, but from what I saw on TV later and while there, I have to think that’s about right.
Before the opening I was seeing IKEA reps saying they expected 10,000 over the weekend. They got that many in the first DAY!
Wow.

I happened to be in Orlando, FL during their opening weekend. We got there about 2:15 pm on Saturday and the dude with the counter was calling out your number. We were 10,008 and 10,009 just that day. It also appeared many had not exited yet. Since we were very familiar with IKEA already, we just went right to the food market, grabbed our Daim and Singoalla staples and got the heck out of dodge.
I am REALLY glad to hear we hit high numbers. As much as I like an IKEA all to myself, it needs to be successful. As busy as it was today, I was telling all the checkout people how nice it was they had a slow day today to work out all the kinks. “Just wait until Saturday!”
I agree Jen, it was very endearing to observe the virgins. I got a chuckle when a lady passed the first furnished room, saw it had a kitchen, and thought THAT was the kitchens department.
We got a lot of stares since we had the BLUE shopping bags and everyone else had yellow ones.
The wardrobe guys were also equally impressed when I brought in my printed planning worksheets I did online before coming to the store. Then there’s my new BFF - the guy controlling the entrance/exit to the loading area. I had my receipt out and available for inspection to gain access to the loading zone parking spaces.
Bottom line — I have to keep pinching myself… well ok, just reminding myself that I can now go to IKEA anytime I want without having to plan a long roadtrip. It’s in my backyard now. My blood-lingonberry content will be over the legal limit before long.
We asked when we left what the number was. I don’t work there but I did apply. I think we were number 9638 (at 9:30) so I would say it will easily go 10,000.
