Theft at IKEA WC
Teens arrested on suspicion of theft at IKEA
I have to say this isn't the first shoplifting I've seen at the new store. I wasn't going to blog this, but what the hell.
Within mere minutes after grand opening, the very first day, we saw shoplifting in the cafe during breakfast.
Two obviously very well off ladies in their 40's (I mean VERY well off) were stuffing the plastic kids cutlery from the cafeteria into their pants. Slyly they thought. First one was going over to grab them out of the holder, then her friend would, and they'd return to transfer them to their purses. But we saw them. Watched them do it more than once.
After we finished breakfast, one of the ladies was on her fourth trip to steal more and we couldn't take any more. We confronted the one at the table, asking how many more pieces of kids wear they were going to steal. She feigned ignorance of course. We told her they could buy an entire bag of them for $2 downstairs (actually less), she looked completely stunned to have been fingered. But not so much that she didn't look guilty as hell. We weren't very quiet about it, I'm sure the tables around us heard.
On the way out, just three tables away were were greeted by a manager keeping and eye on the crowd and we swiftly we pointed her out and reported what they'd done and pointed to them mere feet away. He said that people were often taking them thinking they were disposable, but never by the handful. He was amazed at the brazenness as we were.
I have no idea if they pursued it being opening day and all, though maybe they didn't need to that we'd cornered them and they were standing out, dunno. But I was personally ticked that we finally get a store and women who could easily afford anything in it would steal something so cheap in the first 10 minutes it was open. That's gall I tell ya.

YOU GO GIRL!
I hope you embarassed the CRAP outta them!
Wow, I’m shocked. Not at people stealing plastic tableware, but at the fact that you made such a big deal about it, going as far as to confront the people and then tattle on them. Get a life. You think you’re going to change the world by reporting someone who steals a plastic fork or two - or a hundred - or were you just hoping for a coupon or award from the management? If they were stealing furniture or a cash register, then yes, report them, but you said it yourself. A bag of the ware costs less than two bucks. You really sound like a crybaby. I wouldn’t want to shop next to you. Now get off your “I’m better than others” pedestal and let the employees take care of their customers.
Well it was the fact that the store hadn’t even been open a stinking whole 20 minutes yet (not just for the day, but EVER) and these rich ladies were stealing already. (And by rich I mean I bet they had Lexus SUVs they drove to IKEA form their old Victorian manors in Maidera.)
These aren’t white plastic forks either, they are large handled multicolored kid friendly design that the store washes and reuses in the cafe.

Jen, don’t listen to Andrew. You are not a crybaby. Whether it’s a cash register or plastic cutlery, it still didn’t belong to them. Stealing is stealing. On of the great things about IKEA is that they keep their costs down. And they have to take into account the losses they incur when someone steals from them. Who pays for it in the end? We do.
I like your site, by the way. I happened upon it last month - when you still called it OHIKEA. Why did you change it?
Hey Jen — definitely don’t listen to Andrew. You absolutely did the right thing and the hard thing. I am a bit of a confronter as well (yes, I spoke to a lady who was telling her 3 year old that he was “the effing stupidest kid in the world” and I regularly speak to people who don’t put their carts back into the cart holders (this is a personal pet peeve - it makes me crazy). I think there is something missing in some folks about basic common sense and decency, and if no one else is going to call them on it, heck, I guess we have to.
And, ANDREW…. while they may have been stealing inexpensive items (rich ladies! oh how that would BURN ME), theft like that costs ALL of us more money. Those items still cost the company money to resupply, and enough theft and suddenly, everything costs more.
Rock on, Jen!
