Cleveland to Ikea anyone?
This comes from CIndy in Beachwood, who is looking for a IKEA courier.
Hi Jen,
I came across your website when I was looking for local places to buy ikea furniture.
I live in Beachwood, so the closest ikea is in pittsburgh, but I am not comfortable with driving such a long distance since I’ve just recently started driving. FYI the shipping charges from ikea are VERY expensive. They said it’s $400 if I want something delivered (and I would still need to go to the store to order it), and $100 if I order something online or over the phone.
The problem is, I really like vika manne (the pink, oval desk), but it’s not available online or on the phone. I was wondering if you know any local sources that I could get the desk from?
Thanks a lot!
Cindy
If someone is driving from Cleveland to hit an IKEA feel free to contact Cindy at: sn234@cornell.edu
I’m sure she can even pay you in advance to save herself the ordering long distance charges.
Note to Clevelanders
Or is it Clevelandians? Clevelandites?
Anyway… Now might be a great time to come down and see West Chester versus driving to the Pittsburgh store. I found this on a item page on ikea.com:
ATTENTION PITTSBURGH CUSTOMERS!: Due to Pittsburgh’s upcoming remodel our stock availabilty on our accessory items will not be accurate. Be sure to stock up now on your accessories as our marketplace remodel will begin in May.
So Pittsburgh, already the smallest store (by a bunch), is going to have even less than the already very limited selection it had. Take the extra hour and drive down here.
I don’t know if it’s a remodel or a remodel/expansion, though having been there I don’ know how they’d expand on that hilltop other than going up. So it’s probably just a remodel remodel.

The Cleveland Leader has a post up begging a local city council to do whatever it takes to bring an IKEA to Cleveland’s Steelyard Commons. Since it’s a just a plea for a store I won’t get into the pro/cons of the proposed site, but I will say it does have a nice location on 71.
I’m betting though it will be a few years at least before IKEA is looking at Ohio land again, and even then I’m not sure they’ll put one that far north. Call it a hunch.
I also imagine they won’t want to cannibalize the Pittsburgh store since I’m sure that Clevelanders are a large portion of that store’s profits. Or heck any of the other store’s profits too. I mean, once the West Chester store is up, pretty much most of Ohio will be within 2 hours of an IKEA between the stores in Pittsburgh, Detroit and Cincinnati.

LYNDHURST Rumors are flying that IKEA will replace Expo Design Center at Legacy Village.
“We’re getting 10 calls a day about that,” said Legacy spokesperson Collette Sislak on Monday. “It’s a rampant rumor.”
Sislak said there is nothing to the rumors at this point.
IKEA has been the popular choice among visitors to Legacy Village’s Web site offering suggestions on a business to replace Expo Design Center, 25145 Cedar Road.
IKEA offers home furnishings at affordable prices and allows the customer to assemble the products themselves, saving them the cost of labor. IKEA has stores in 29 countries. The nearest IKEA is in Pittsburgh.
Legacy Village officials, though, believe the Expo Design Center location is not big enough for an IKEA and are skeptical as to whether that company would come to Lyndhurst.”
Now, I said this months ago. STOP Spreading this rumor. Click for more and learn WHY!

IKEA to come to Cleveland?
UrbanOhio.com thread on this site and inside is a rumor that IKEA has purchased land in Cleveland.
I have not substantiated this one yet, but looking at the site in question I HIGHLY doubt it. It just doens’t gel with what they typically always require as a stone cold non-neogitable.
Personally I think Columbus was a better location for the first Ohio IKEA, but it could be timing and bargaining fell through. Perhaps they will still try.
With Detroit getting one, and Cleveland possibly getting one, our road trips for Swedish crack have at least halved.
