Download the IKEA Catalog

December 28th, 2006

The folks at ebook-portal have a late xmas pressie for you. The 2007 IKEA catalog as a download.

I don’t know how and I really don’t care why they went to the trouble, but for a commodity (and yes it is one) with such a short availability span – god bless’em! It’s about time.

IKEA has the catalog as a online flip-through piece of Flash, but not a solid download. It’s a 32MB PDF so it’s understandable IKEA doesn’t want to cripple it’s servers for god knows how long to make it downloadable knowing the rabidness of their “Tokigs”. It could bring down western civilization as we know it.

You can get yours here, at the download link, after scrolling past the big annoying block of ads… and clicking the tiny little link all the way under the HUGE ad that you’ll get on the next page that is almost hidden against the bottom browser status bar. (Here is a direct link to the download page, if it works.)

The catalog looks nice though! (Even if the prices are in British Pound Sterling.)

IKEA folks – I need a assist.

Cafepress is giving me seven kinds of grief over trying to sell items with the OHIKEA logo. Sure it looks liek IKEA’s but it’s not it. In fact I’ve even split up the word into OHI KEA with a Ohio flag over the split… (you’ll see it updated here soon) They red flag stuff almost as soon as I’ve uploaded it.

Strangly the same exact logos for shirts are not being flagged, but they keep nixing them for mugs and non-wearables. It’s way funked up.

Anyway is there anyone reading this from IKEA that has the power to send a letter to tell the cafepress goons to lay off and let me have my fun? I barely sell any, so it’s not like I’m making money, but for those few who want one I want them to have one. I figure if IKEA objected to the logo homage I would have gotten a C&D two years ago…

Shoot me a email if you can help… free shirt in it for ya!

More on the Winter Sale

December 13th, 2006

I will be at IKEA Canton (MI) on Dec 30 or 31, is anyone else going to swoop in on the Winter Sale and want to meet up for a plate of meatballs? I wasn’t wanting to go on the weekend, but as I just got a new job going during the week is kinda tough now.

Speaking of IKEA’s Winter Sale – An IKEA employee wrote with some additional info”

Another tip (from an employee of IKEA also) is to look for yellow banners. These banners with red writing will be the items with the highest markdowns. This year you may find items that may be discontinued, but may show up again. Without a doubt if you see it during sale, buy it.

If it shows up again it’s just because it’s still in stock, I would gather, but once they run out it’s gone never to return.

Info on the IKEA Winter Sale:

December 5th, 2006

I knew this, but figured many might not so here’s a letter from a IKEA employee who likes to read OHIKEA:

I wasn’t sure if the many people who will be flocking to IKEA for the Winter Sale are aware of this, so I thought I’d share. All of the items on sale are being discontinued. We do this twice a year to make room for new merchandise. If you see something you like on sale, do not wait to buy it. It will not be returning and there’s usually not much left of these items.

The exception would be anything in a high-profile area with lots of signage in each department. We call these opening offers or shop windows. If we are really highlighting it we have tons to get rid of. In this case it may pay to wait as we will reduce the price again (and again) to clear this merchandise out. In some cases we have gone from a product that retails at $20 and reduced it to 50 cents!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of the discontinued items. The “thinker-elves” at IKEA of Sweden just come up with waaay too many nifty product ideas and we need to make room for them.

So there you go. Everything on the Winter Sale is really on closeout.

I learned this a couple years ago. My Jerker desk – that I got half off – was redesigned after the sale and came in other colors and my Ottenby dressers are no longer are sold at all… the only thing I’d keep in mind is if you are buying something to be part of a set (like a bookcase wall, or matching bedroom set) and are buying in batches is to make sure that the other pieces of the line will still be around, and in the color you want, later. If something not matching will annoy you get the charge card and just buy it all at once while you’re there.

I’ve seen more than few cases where a particular color of a line was being eliminated and one where the color was being redone (a new birch color).

But bargains galore are to be had end of this month! Don’t miss out! It all starts Dec 26 and usually runs for 2 weeks. Earlier you go, the better deals you’ll find. It’s why we have made IKEA a part of our Holiday travels, and pretty much why I look forward to christmas!

Keep up to date

Reader Photos: Carolyn’s House

October 5th, 2006

Our next Ohio Ikea house comes from Carolyn Tavolier:

Sumitted to OHIKEA.com: Carolyn at Ikea.jpg I LOVE Ikea!! I’m an interior design grad, and I GET IT!!! Functional yet asethically pleasing. Well-made. What can I say? I am not afraid of an little old allen wrench. I put together everything you see in the pictures. I try to convert every person I meet.

The EXPEDIT was our first purhcase nearly two years ago. It holds over 1200+ albums – my husband previously stored them in 3 Sauder wardrobes! (Note the GRUVA lighting). Once we moved his albums to the basement, this spare bedroom became our office! Note the BILLY bookcsse with the CD inserts (LOVE THEM)!! And I love the MYLONIT LIGHTING–the red color gives it a jazzy lounge atmosphere.

Carolyn's BedroomOur bedroom glows with STORM lighting. And we gained extra storage with HOL. (See the POLARVIDE throw?)

But I’m really proud of the basement. My husband has more music than is humanly possible to listen to and I had to come up with a way to store it. Thank God for BILLY (he’s the other man in my life)! I have 2 more bookcases with inserts (he has over 700 CD’s and counting). And on the wall, I have LACK shelves for DVD’s, his other passion.

Sumitted to OHIKEA.com: Carolyn's Basement Our 2nd spare bedroom has HEMNES 6-drawer and the MEDAL daybed.

So what do you think? Am I in the club?? And how many African-Americans would wear a hat like that!!! But it puts me in mood!

I love your website–keep it up! I’ll at the opening with bells on. It’s less than an hour from my house. (Our trips to Pittsburgh were about 2 hours or less.)

Take Care!

Carolyn Tavolier

If you’d like to share your IKEA home’s pictures just add them to the IKEA West Chest Flickr pool or email them to me and I’ll add them, and your story, here!

I’ll start! Here’s my Livingroom!

My west living room wall ala ikea My ikea livingroom - north wall

And you can’t see it but I have a big Ektorp sofa and chair (red), the lamborn coffetable that they just stopped making (boo!), an Ottenby side table, and another leather IKEA recliner that they dont make anymore and I can’t remember the name of anwyay… so yeah, my entire livingroom except for a couple lamps and a magazine rack.

And that’s just the livingroom.

What do you got?

For the Email subscribers

September 22nd, 2006

An apology for the rehash. You can probably just delete this from your inbox.

In an effort to better organize posts and correctly archive the “saga” I have been doing some re-assigning or cross assigning of categories. As a result the service that sends the feed emails might send you a bunch of old posts again. Every edit I make seems to cause it to resend posts, thinking threy are new. I don’t know how to fix that, sorry. I am thought going to try to do this all in one day so it shoudl only effect ONE digest. I’m also going to try to change the email settings for today only to try to help this from being a BIG digest of old crap.

So, you’ve seen all the junk in this digest before. Move along little doggies.
